The Centre for Communication and Sustainable Development for All (CECOSDA) marked its presence in the regional meeting organized by Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) from 13 to 14 October 2016 in Johannesburg, located in South Africa. This meeting’s objective was to facilitate reception of the FSC approval in Africa. The meeting enclosed several activities namely: presentation of exposes on timber control strategies of the FSC, the issue of pesticide use in forest concessions, analyzing the motions and workshops.
At the end of the conference, viewpoints were collected for an improvement in the functioning of FSC in Africa and the Congo Basin precisely. With regards to the recommendations, it was said that, the FSC must take into account the different strategies of international conventions (UNCAC convention on D/B, Convention on Desertification and the Stockholm Convention) to make her action more visible in Africa. Adopt French as the official language for Africa and the Congo Basin in particular. Amend the motion 65 which speaks of intact forest landscapes (IFL). Make known the FSC by incorporating training modules in national forestry schools. Create and support a platform for African FSC members. Organize meetings with small farmers in order to facilitate the obtaining of an FSC certificate. Work with national regulations to harmonize the standard according to states. Thus, it is in this spirit of coordination and harmonization that Africa and the Congo Basin will get more involved in the actions of the FSC.
