The Center for Communication and Sustainable Development for All (CECOSDA), with the support of UNESCO's Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC), organized a two-day training workshop on Sustainable Development Goals (SDDs) and Environmental Reporting for community journalists, members of the Green Alert Network (GAN). This event took place on the 14 and 15 November 2016 at hotel Azur, Yaounde and aimed at providing community journalists with skills and expertise on sustainability issues so as to enhance their efforts in sensitizing and informing policy makers on sustainable development issues in their communities in Cameroon. The activity focused on the challenges community journalists face in their efforts to communicate on sustainable development matters in remote areas.
Following the training, community journalists and rural media from the ten regions of the country expressed their engagement and participation in environmental reporting for the achievement of sustainable development goals. This engagement was expressed with their own words as thus: “Green Alert, the community is committed”. More so, the description of the various ecological problems outlined by community journalists during group work help to insist on the quality of the communication done. As such, with this mind, they will be able to communicate and sensitize on issues such as climate change, depletion of resources, biodiversity and extinction, sustainable urbanization and pollution, waste management, and environmental protection in general. Thus, community media will be able to write online articles, produce relevant radio programs for environmental education, and most importantly, organize educational talks and community activities while taking into account gender aspects and the importance of local languages in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs).
